Maalaala Mo Kaya April 30, 2011 episode was AJ Perez’ last TV project.

He was joined by child actor Bugoy Cariño in that episode that brought the young performer to an “actor” status if only he was still alive.

AJ in MMK "tsinelas" Episode
The whole nation tuned in to “Maalaala Mo Kaya” (MMK) on Saturday, April 30, as ABS-CBN aired AJ Perez’ episode titled “Tsinelas”.

The episode, being AJ’s final performance as an actor before the fatal accident last April 17 that caused his sudden death, generated 26.8% in AGB Nielsen Mega Manila Household Ratings and 34.3% in Kantar Media among National households — one of the highest ratings for the show and also the highest-rating show last April 30 in both Kantar Media-TNS National Household Ratings and AGB Nielsen Mega Manila Household Ratings.


Here were the Top 10 Primetime programs on April 30, 2011 among Mega Manila households (Household Ratings):

1. Maalaala Mo Kaya (ABS-CBN) – 26.8%
2. Pilipinas Got Talent (ABS-CBN) – 22.8%
3. Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho (GMA-7) – 19%
4. Mind Master (GMA-7) – 18.2%
5. Imbestigador (GMA-7) – 17.1%
6. Spooky Nights: The Ringtone (GMA-7) – 15.6%

Here were the Top 10 Primetime programs on the overnight survey of Kantar Media (formerly TNS) among National households on April 30, 2011:

1. Maalaala Mo Kaya (ABS-CBN) – 34.3%
2. Pilipinas Got Talent (ABS-CBN) – 27.5%
3. Wansapantaym: Stickers (ABS-CBN) – 21.8%
4. Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho (GMA-7) – 16.5%
5. TV Patrol Weekend (ABS-CBN) / Mind Master (GMA-7) – 15%
6. Spooky Nights: The Ringtone (GMA-7) – 14.3%

The late actor portrayed the role of a homeless boy who travelled from Manila to Samar with his younger brother (Bugoy Carino,) in search of their relatives.
The episode showed the story of love and bond between brothers and their determination to carry on with their life’s journey together.

While it was being aired, people who were watching couldn’t help but to hold their tears and how they were feeling watching AJ effectively portrayed the role of a homeless teenager. This made AJ and MMK a trend worldwide on Twitter.

After the show, AJ’s family, who now managed AJ’s Twitter account, tweeted and thanked all those who watched the said episode.

Steph Ayson, AJ’s girlfriend, also tweeted a day after the episode was aired on TV, on what she felt towards AJ at that time. “You’re still very much alive to me. I hope you can feel how proud I am of you up there in heaven. @ajperez17 #ajperezmmk.”

Tony Award-winning thespian Lea Salonga was one of 12 individuals who were given the Heritage Award at the Outstanding Filipino Americans in New York Awards (TOFA-NY) held on Oct. 29 at Carnegie Hall.“I am happy to be in this community…I'm glad to be here and thankful to everyone - mom, friends, community,” Salonga was quoted as saying in a report by abs-cbnnews.com on Nov. 2.

Salonga, touted by the TOFA-NY as “the most celebrated Filipino talent on Broadway,” has appeared in “Flower Drum Song” and “Les Miserables.” In 1991, she won the Best Performance by an Actress in a Musical award at the prestigious Tony Awards for her performance as Kim in "Miss Saigon."

According to its official Facebook page, the TOFA-NY “was created to give recognition toindividuals and organizations that have raised the profile of the Filipino American community in a unique and positive way – and to celebrate their achievements.

Selection of winners was done via Facebook for the first time “to make this year’s TOFA truly a people’s award.”

Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said in a statement, "New York has always been proud to be a city of promise and opportunity for people of every background, including generations of Filipino Americans.

“We take this opportunity to honor the men and women who contribute to our city's amazing energy and spirit.”

The other personalities honored by the TOFA-NY were “Dancing with the Stars” junior champs Craig and Samantha Abaya; CEO, lawyer, philanthropist and advocate Loida Nicolas Lewis; organizations Filipino-American Human Services Inc. and Filipino-American NationalHistorical Society; weekly newspaper Filipino Reporter; Pulitzer Award-winning journalist Jose Antonio Vargas; reporter and videographer at ABS-CBN International Don Tagala; and film and music entrepreneur/indie film producer Bessie Badilla.

AJ receives posthumous nomination at 2011 Golden Screen TV Awards


The 2011 Golden Screen TV Awards recently revealed its list of nominees, and among them is late actor AJ Perez for his performance in the “Tsinelas” episode of “Maalaala Mo Kaya.” He was nominated for the Outstanding Performance by an Actor in a Single Drama or Telemovie Program award.

“I'm so proud of him. Dream talaga ni AJ na magkaroon ng acting award,” Perez’s father Gerry told ABS-CBN news in an article posted on Nov. 1.

“Tsinelas” was aired on April 30 this year, two weeks after the young actor's death. He was killed in a highway accident in Tarlac en route to Manila from a show in Dagupan on April 17.

Perez’s co-nominees under said category were Enchong Dee (“Maalaala Mo Kaya,” “Parol” episode), Coco Martin (“Maalaala Mo Kaya,” "Silbato" episode), Alwyn Uytingco (“Star Confession: The Makata Tawanan Story") and Phillip Salvador (“Star Confession: Malayang Pamamahayag: The Ramon Tulfo Story”).The 2011 Golden Screen TV Awards will be held on Nov. 29 at the Teatrino in Greenhills.
